Cobalt Train StationThe town of Cobalt offers guided tours of the city, allowing you to learn more about mining history in the region and its influence in the development of the town. Take a guided walk through a century of history. Choose from one of three available tours.

The best way to discover Cobalt is to visit the train station, which was converted into a reception center. Here you will find an interpretive center that will bring you back in time to the early 1900s, when the silver rush was just starting. After watching a film of 10 minutes, will understand how this city saw the arrival of 100 silver mines over a 5-year span. The short film is also available in French. Children will find this presentation very interesting, all the while learning about the regional mining history.

Thereafter, you have the opportunity to discover why the city was named the most historic city in Ontario, thanks to the Silver Mines Trail. Little Silver Vein siteThis six-kilometer itinerary will allow you to read more on the mining industry, thanks to interpretation panels that have been installed along the way. Children can have fun enjoying the outdoors while experiencing these different sites where they can learn about the area. The tour can be done either by bike or on foot.

Some breakpoints offer spectacular views, especially the Little Silver Vein site, which exhibits a cut in the ground where a vein was once extracted from the ground. Discover a site with old mining equipment and one that depicts the stages of developing a mining operation during the silver era. Visit http://www.cobalt.ca/index.php/tours/51-heritage-silver-trail to learn more about this historic trail.

For history enthusiasts, you could spend entire days exploring the archives in the Northern Ontario Mining Museum. There, you have the possibility of learning more on the social and cultural life lived in the Cobalt camps in the early 1990s, observe an exhibition on rocks, as well as collections of artifacts and mining equipment.

You can even buy handmade jewelry crafted with pure silver that was recovered in Cobalt, or other unique items made locally. Visit their store to bring back memories!
