In early 1900, the Temiskaming region became the posh city of the North, thanks to silver rush in Cobalt. Here was the highest rate of millionaires in Canada. At that time, more than 32 millionaires lived along the lake. Having been spared the Great Fire of 1922, many of these houses can still be admired today.Continue your walk to the waterfront to see the Haileybury Marina and the beautiful sculpture made by Ernie Fauvelle, a piece of art created for the arrival of the Millennium. The life size bronze statue shows a child being taken out of the lake after the fire of October 4, 1922. There, you'll also find a list of all the fire's survivors' names, including my grandmother, Regina Cloutier Fortier. If you are looking to venture into nature, the hike to Devil's Rock, a granite escarpment overlooking Lake Timiskaming where it is possible to contemplate the mass of water from a panoramic angle, will impress you. Older than 2,200 million years, this rock formation is over 600 feet high, from which 300 feet surpass the water level. Several take the opportunity to indulge in rock climbing on Devil's Rock. If you're looking for a good hike, you can start from Bucke Park; but if you have less time on your hands, you can park your car on the edge of the road 567, which will restrict the tour to about 40 minutes. Meanwhile, Mill Creek Trail boasts an astonishing scene! At the end of this paved 2 km trail, you will discover the Mill Creek Falls, the highest waterfalls in the area. No need to venture far to enjoy the natural beauty. To get there, access is at the junction of Albert Street and the Farr Cemetery. MuseumsDiscover the region's history!
