Temiskaming Shores is the amalgamation of three formerly separate cities: New Liskeard, Haileybury and Dymond. Cobalt is not part of this settlement; however, it is adjacent town at Haileybury and shares with them a very similar story. With a population of 10,442 inhabitants, this community in Northern Ontario is dependent on the mining industry. The fertile soil of this valley also prompted farmers in the region that planted large fields nestled between two small mountains. However, it is the importance of the mining industry, with cobalt and gold deposits in its soils that led people to settle in this part of the country. During the First World War era, the Great Fire of 1922 razed most of Haileybury; but, many years later, the community rebuilds itself. The history of Haileybury continues to this day to play a major role in the daily life of the community. EventsEvery year during the first weekend of July, New Liskeard launches its Biker's Reunion, an event that attracts more than thousands of passionate riders! Organized to raise money for cancer, this event allows participants to ride their bikes in a parade over 120 km, as well as participating in other activities.Local Art - Art GalleryDowntown New Liskeard boasts a few local gems. We highly recommend a visit to the art gallery to discover the talents of local artists, such as Rose Aimee Belanger, who is exhibiting her bronze sculptures. Handmade by this woman from Earlton, the neighboring town to New Liskeard, these statues are inspired by her daily life.Other local artists, including Ernie Fauvelle, show off their masterpieces in this gallery. The talent of Mr. Fauvelle can also be seen a short walk from the Suites, with his narrative sculpture of the Great Fire of 1922, which depicts what many families have lived during this tragic event. Meanwhile, artist Laura Landers, devotes herself to painting and drawing. Known for her handmade cards and paintings, you'll recognize the landscapes of Temiskaming in her work. Laura Landers’s masterpieces can be admired inside the Suites, where over 20 paintings have carefully been hanged on the walls. ShoppingThe New Liskeard mall has a variety of stores that will satisfy all of your shopping needs. With an assortment of shops, you'll be sure to find something for everyone’s taste.Downtown New Liskeard, which some tend to forget to visit, is also great for shopping. Come take a quick visit to see what you can find! |
