The Québec Side Print
| |More
The Temiskaming region was formed by glaciers during the last ice age and is today a favorable region for outdoor activities. First occupied by the Algonquians 8,000 years ago, and later explored by the expeditions of Radisson in 1670, the region thereafter saw Hudson's Bay Company trading posts settlements.

The region includes Lake Temiskaming, which also attracts many visitors year round who come especially to enjoy outdoor activities. Nestled between the mountains on the Quebec side and relatively flat land on the Ontario side, the Temiscamingue boreal forests are full of fauna and flora.

Lake Temiskaming
Lake Temiskaming is on average 120 meters deep, but includes certain areas of over 216.2 meters; its name is derived from Algonquian word Temikaming, which means "deep waters". Nestled against the Laurentians to the east and the Ontario land to the west, Lake Temiskaming drains into the Ottawa River at its opening. With more than 30 species of fish swimming in its waters, including pike, sturgeon, trout, walleye, carp, perch and smallmouth and largemouth bass, the lake is well known among fishing enthusiasts.

Ville-Marie
Communities found on the Quebec side within an hour drive from the Suites are Ville-Marie and Notre-Dame-du-Nord, two charming villages that boast with nice people and a story of their own.

Ville-Marie was born in 1679, with the arrival of Fort Témiscamingue. When the Oblates of Mary Immaculate built a mission there in 1863, the place was given the name "Ville-Marie. "

The oldest town in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, we consider this community as the jewel of Temiskaming. We strongly encourage you to visit the area when the Foire gourmande de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue is taking place, a fair that will tantalize your taste buds!

Today, the main attraction of the community is the Fort Témiscamingue, the only attraction of Canada Park in North-Western Quebec.

Fort Témiscamingue in Ville-Marie
Once a major trading post, Ville-Marie still possesses the fort that was built there by the Ojibway in the seventeenth century. The National Historic Site of Fort Témiscamingue, located 45 minutes from the Suites, Fort Témiscamingueoffers an enriching cultural experience that will allow you to observe more than three centuries of Canadian history. Children will love browsing the exhibitions that are mostly out by the lake and participate in entertaining workshops given by the Fort’s performers.

This trading post once owned by the Hudson’s Bay Company, will bring you back in time to relive the Fort’s lifestyle; come lift a fur bale and see how the exchanges were made in the trading post!

Interactive displays, such as Obadjiwan, testify the different cultural presences of the time, including Native American, French and English. During the summer, guided tours are offered every day, and a multitude of activities animated by a team of costumed guides and interpreters are available to you.

During your visit, stop in for a bite to eat at La Bannick, a restaurant with a unique atmosphere that focuses on the natural scenery of the region. An incredible view of Lake Temiskaming awaits, as well as carefully prepared dishes that will satisfy your taste buds!
