The Lumber Barons House is an historical 1907 mansion which clearly reflects the wealth of the Cobalt/Haileybury mining era.
As soon as you walk in the Lumber Barons House you are overwhelmed by the décor, which brings you back in time. Our designer for the house restoration project, Renelle Laliberté of Renelle Design, received the Canadian Historical Decor IDEA 2015 Award for her work at the Lumber Barons House. The colours used in the house and for all the fabrics were inspired by the original stained glass in the living room.
The Lumber Barons House is ideal for your receptions. It has been used on several occasions for cocktails, formal dinners, workshops, or simple gatherings with family & friends. Some guests even decide to use the house to meet their own clients.
More About the Lumber Barons House
The large front porch with the beautiful view of lake Temiskaming is certainly impressing and is an ideal location for your morning coffee or for a family or group lunch. At the back of the house, a very private deck with large trees providing a buffer with the street, BBQ, and a year around spa is also available. The large 5-lot property has ample parking space, room for exterior games and a fire pit.
The main floor is designed in a ‘C’ shape, which was very unique for a house constructed in 1907. This uniqueness provides for a very smooth flow in the house so you can have a very large group spread out throughout the house without really realizing it. At the time, most houses were constructed as square shape two stories. As you open the door, a large cathedral ceiling entrance will immediately give you the feeling that you are walking-in a very unique house. The spacious kitchen has a nook area with a bay window overlooking the back deck and spa. The dining room is impressive and can seat up to 14 people. For larger groups, a different table arrangement can be setup. The living room is very ‘lumber baron’ with the wooden beams, the fireplace and the furniture. Bench seats have been added at several places in the living room in order to maximize the number of guests that could take place. The main floor also has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, one of them being an ensuite.
The 2nd floor has been redesigned to serve several purposes. First, it is an ideal place for meetings and retreats with a large meeting room for 25 people and two smaller rooms for breakout sessions. Two bathrooms and a kitchenette are also available. The rooms and conference room can be converted to sleeping areas and groups could use the entire 2nd floor which would be great for family gatherings or sports teams.

A Bit of History About the Lumber Barons House
The theme of the Lumber Barons House has been developed around the story of the Lumber Barons. The lumber industry started in mid 1800’s when J.R. Booth, one of the richest man in Canada had the logging rights all around the lake. This was before any pioneer settled in the area at the end of the century. The great white pines were harvested and squared in order to attach them together to float as rafts all the way to Quebec City to be shipped in London.
In 1903, while the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario railway was being built through Cobalt some of the richest silver mines in the world were discovered. News of the discovery spread like wild fires and thousands of people arrived to find prosperity. Over 100 mines were discovered and started operations within a few years. Many of the new millionaires preferred settling along the shores of Lake Temiskaming and constructed their houses in Haileybury along called Millionaire’s Row.
The house was built in 1907 in this neighbourhood, by Bill Powell, one of these mine owners who became rich overnight with these silver finds.
Howard Dunbar, bought the house in 1921, after making his money in selling wood tiles to the railway company and building a planning mill and door factory to supply the great demand for homes and businesses created by Cobalt’s silver rush.
On October 4th, 1922, one of the biggest disaster in Canada occurred when a fire flattened Haileybury and 18 townships surrounding the community. The fire is called the Great Fire of Haileybury since it was the community that was most impacted by the disaster with 4,000 people left homeless. Only 76 homes, located on Millionaire’s Row survived the fire. This was a very profitable time for the Lumber Barons of the area with the great demand to rebuild so many homes and businesses.
After the fire, Howard Dunbar raised the roof of the house and added a second floor to make extra bedrooms. The house was in the Dunbar family for more than 60 years.
