Life Celebration

Sometimes people choose to hold a life celebration instead of a funeral. After a family member passes away, the survivors may want to offer this type of event to celebrate the deceased rather than have a more somber funeral.  This decision is often based on the personality and requests of the deceased.   Some people want their friends and family to turn their passing into a gathering. Other times, it’s simply a way for everyone to get together after time has passed to celebrate the deceased person’s life.

When you attend a celebration of someone’s life, you should expect to experience a joyful event. As the name implies, you’re there to celebrate rather than mourn.  By its very definition, a celebration of life should be celebratory and joyful.  Encourage all of the attendees to be positive and remember all of the good things about the deceased. The event may appear to be more of a party than something commemorating the person’s death. It is less likely to go by the format and conventions of a religious funeral service.
A celebration of life is not generally held in a funeral home or church. It’s more often in someone’s home, an outdoor venue such as a garden or park, or a rented facility. The location is normally chosen based on the interests and passions of the deceased.  A celebration of life is held after the burial or cremation of the deceased and it could occur a few days after the person passes or up to several weeks or even months later. Some people choose to have a celebration of life on the anniversary of the death of the deceased.
There are no steadfast rules about what you need to do at a celebration of life event. It is still a good idea to have some sort of structure, even if it isn’t rigid.

Here are some ideas for what to do at a celebration of life:

  • Ask people to speak about their experiences with the deceased.
  • Encourage the sharing of some humor as well as poignant situations.
  • Share memories by asking people to bring photos and mementos.
  • Make a memory book or box and ask everyone to contribute a picture or item.
  • Play a video or slide show of the deceased having fun at different times of his or her life.
  • Make a playlist of the deceased person’s favorite music for everyone to enjoy.

A Funeral Stay

Facing the lost of a loved one is never easy. The main objective of the funeral or life commemorating of a close relative is to help the grieving process. The support from family and friends is vital to help us get through the pain of losing a family member.

The Presidents’ Suites is the perfect place to reunite the family and friends in a spacious and welcoming environment, especially if there are no family members living in the area, or when nobody has a house large enough to host a large group of guests. The neutral environment of the house encourages all to get their hands dirty instead of giving the responsibility to someone in particular.

Our historical homes are ideal for funeral stays and gatherings.  The large living rooms, kitchen and dining areas can accommodate families and friends in a friendly environment.  For guests from out of town, spacious rooms are available.  The various rooms and areas of the house encourage exchange among members who need to mourn or need to have serious discussions in a more personal and private setting.  The large gardens, the various balconies and the waterfront create a more relaxed atmosphere and make the process more positive.

Over the years, we have received very positive feedback from families or groups that have stayed at the Presidents’ Suites.  They never expected that the houses and the atmosphere it helped create would help them so much in their mourning process.
